Frequently Asked Questions
What is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates is a form of Pilates performed on a machine called a reformer, which uses springs, pulleys and a moving carriage. It provides resistance to help you build strength, control, balance, flexibility and core stability.
Is Reformer Pilates suitable for beginners?
Yes. We offer Reformer classes specifically designed for first-timers. You don’t need any Pilates experience, the instructor guides you through setup, safety and technique.
What are the benefits of Reformer Pilates?
Pilates strengthens the deep core muscles, including the pelvic floor and transverse abdominal muscles, improves posture and alignment, and builds full-body strength. It enhances flexibility and mobility while remaining low-impact and joint-friendly, making it ideal for supporting injury prevention and rehabilitation.
What should I wear to a class?
Wear comfortable, fitted clothing that allows you to move easily. Grip socks are mandatory for hygiene and safety. You can purchase them at the studio. Avoid loose shorts or clothing with zips.
How long is a typical class?
Classes are 50 mins long.
How often should I do Reformer Pilates?
For best results, people usually attend 2–3 times a week. In 10 sessions, you’ll feel the difference. In 20 sessions, you’ll see the difference. And in 30 sessions, you’ll have a whole new body” Joseph Pilates
What do I do if I have an injury?
If you are carrying an injury, please inform the instructor at the start of the class so they can adapt exercises where appropriate or contact Henleaze Physio Clinic. There is no need to contact us in advance in most cases, letting the instructor know on arrival helps keep things simple. If you are unsure whether a class is suitable, we recommend booking a physio appointment or a 1-to-1 reformer class for more personalised guidance before attending a group class.
What’s the difference between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates?
Mat Pilates uses your bodyweight on the floor and focuses on control, precision, and deep core engagement. Reformer Pilates incorporates springs and adjustable resistance, allowing for greater variety, support, and progressive challenge. Many people find reformer sessions feel more dynamic and make it easier to feel the muscles actively “working.”
Do I need to be flexible to start?
No, Reformer Pilates improves flexibility over time. Classes are adaptable, and instructors provide modifications for all levels.
What should I expect in my first class?
You’ll learn how to safely use the carriage, footbar, straps, and springs, along with foundational movements such as footwork, core exercises, and arms and legs in straps. You’ll also develop the ability to control the machine with slow, steady, and precise movement. Expect a supportive pace with plenty of hands-on instruction throughout.
